Common Wheelbase Mounting Styles

Roller skate plate mounting options determine your wheelbase length (axle-to-axle) and axle position (under the boot placement), directly balancing your speed, stability, and agility on the rink or street. New and recreational skaters should use the standard mount recommended by the manufacturer. Experienced skaters will have various mounting preferences, depending on skating disciplines, activities and personal setup preferences. If you are training, performing or competing in any roller sport, please consult with your coach before making any wheelbase length or mounting position decisions.
1
Standard Mount
The Standard Mount places the front axle directly under the ball of the foot. This style is the most popular choice for beginners because it offers a wider wheelbase, predictable control, and steady balance for recreational skating.
2
Long Mount or Back Heel Mount
A Long Mount or Back Heel Mount uses the manufacturer's recommended full-size plate aligned toward the heel. This extended wheelbase provides maximum stability and efficient power transfer at higher speeds for distance skaters.
3
Sport or Agility Mount
The Sport or Agility Mount shifts a slightly downsized plate forward on the boot. This shortens the wheelbase to create a sharper turning radius while keeping the axles responsive under your foot's natural pressure points.
4
Short Forward Mount
Short Forward Mounting uses a plate sized down one to two sizes and placed further forward on the boot. It reduces weight and maximizes agility for tight maneuvers, which is a favorite setup in roller derby.
5
Artistic or Dance Mount
An Artistic or Dance Mount moves a slightly smaller plate inward from the toe and heel. This compact footprint gives rhythm and artistic skaters the precision needed for rapid footwork and spins.
